Surprisingly within only 2 years' learning, she won first prize at the Croatian International Competition for violin. At age thirteen, Mateja won a special prize at the regional competition in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Before long, she was encouraged to take a further education in Austria, and there she worked in masterclasses with renowned professors Brian Finlayson and Igor Ozim.

Mateja was a member of Kammerorchester in Klagenfurt and played in several quartets, trios, and even jazz ensembles. In Sydney she studied with Alice Waten at the Conservatorium of music and holds a degree in Bachelor of music in performance. She plays regularly with numerous Sydney based ensembles and is passionate about passing her knowledge to people who want to learn how to play the violin.
