Oliver Cox
Percussion/Piano Teacher

Oliver is an internationally experienced percussionist, pianist, composer and music educator with more than 25 years of teaching and professional performance experience. His career has taken him across orchestral performance, contemporary music, theatre, creative projects, composition and music education, giving him a broad and highly versatile musical background.
As a performer, Oliver has collaborated with many internationally recognised orchestras, ensembles, artists and organisations, including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Aurora Orchestra, BBC Singers, Heritage Orchestra, Wigmore Hall and BBC Proms. He has also worked with internationally renowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie and performed as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. His professional work has extended across classical music, contemporary repertoire, theatre productions and large-scale creative projects, including Disney’s The Lion King.
Alongside his performing career, Oliver has maintained a strong and consistent commitment to music education. He has been teaching private piano and percussion students for more than 25 years and has worked with students of a wide range of ages, abilities and musical goals. He has held teaching positions at the Royal Welsh College of Music, Blackheath Conservatoire of Music and the London Oratory School, and has also delivered masterclasses and workshops at conservatoires and for leading classical music organisations.
Oliver’s teaching philosophy is centred around the belief that every student learns differently. Rather than applying a single method to everyone, he develops an individual pathway based on each student’s level, personality, learning style and musical goals. His lessons are carefully structured while remaining engaging, creative and enjoyable.
A strong technical and musical foundation is central to Oliver’s approach. He places particular emphasis on developing healthy technique, rhythmic security, coordination, listening skills, musical awareness and confidence from the earliest stages. His aim is not only to help students learn individual pieces or prepare for exams, but also to build skills that will support their musical development over the long term.
For percussion students, Oliver can work across areas including drum kit, orchestral percussion, rhythm, coordination, ensemble skills, reading and musicianship. His broad professional background allows students to explore both traditional and contemporary approaches to percussion while developing strong fundamentals.
For piano students, Oliver combines technical development with musicianship, interpretation, rhythm, listening and creativity. He is equally comfortable working with students who wish to follow a structured examination pathway and those who prefer a broader musical approach that includes improvisation, composition and creative development.
Oliver has extensive experience working within the ABRSM and Trinity College London examination systems in the UK and is also familiar with the AMEB pathway in Australia. He believes examinations can be highly valuable for some students, while others may benefit from a more flexible learning pathway depending on their goals and interests.
His broader areas of expertise also include music theory, composition, improvisation, chamber music, music production and creative artist development, allowing him to support students beyond instrumental technique alone.
